Betty “Baha” Jean Britton

Betty “Baha” Jean Britton, 81, of Harviell, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Britton was born on Jan. 20, 1935 in Coulter, Iowa. She worked as a secretary and enjoyed doing crafts, visiting with friends and family, traveling, and setting on the back porch looking at nature. Betty attended St. Matthew Lutheran Church in corning, Ar. and served as Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of Laureate Epsilon Tau, Beta Sigma Phi.

Betty enjoyed life to its fullest. Spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and attending their ball games and school activities. She never me a stranger and welcomed all with a hug.

On Sept. 8, 1956 she married Ray Curtis Britton. He survives.

Also surviving are, 2 daughters, Pat Pennington and husband Gary of Harviell, Lynn Sheppard and husband Bobby of Harviell; grandchildren, Jeremy Pennington and wife Jennifer of Gardner Kansas, Justin Pennington of Harviell, Mo., Brooke and Ashley Sheppard of Harviell, Mo.; and great-grandchildren, Oliver Pennington of Gardner Kansas, Lauren and Cooper Pennington of Harviell, Mo.

Services will take place on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016 at the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. with funeral beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Burial will take place at Kinsey Cemetery.


Daniel Leroy McNew

Daniel Leroy McNew, 85, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at his home.

Mr. McNew was born February 11, 1931 in Butler County. He was a member of Oak Grove New Beginning Church in Poplar Bluff.  He had worked as a truck driver for Rowe Furniture Co. He enjoyed playing music and singing, for years singing with the McNew Gospel Singers. He also loved teaching the Bible and being with his family.

On July 30, 1949, he married Dortha McNew in Piggott, Ar.  She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Daniel McNew (Lynn), Steven McNew (Crystal), and John McNew and one daughter, Veronica Pruitt; a sister, Wanda Sullivan and step-brother, Kirk Clark (Bonnie); 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; as well as 6 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, David McNew and mother, Laura (Blagg) McNew; sisters, Betty Edwards and Evelyn Morse; brother, Darrell McNew and half-brother, Alvin Sisk; and daughter-in-law, Mamie McNew and son-in-law, Terry Pruitt.

Visitation will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday September 3, 2016, at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff, followed by the funeral service at 1:30 p.m., in the chapel, with Rev. Melburn Deaton officiating.  Mr. McNew will be laid to rest in the New Oak Hill Cemetery.

 

James Fiske

James Columbus Fiske, beloved husband and father passed away Thursday, Sept 1, 2016 peacefully at his home.

James was born June 11, 1930 to parents Tom and Iva (Mayes) Fiske.

He married his much adored wife, Georgiabelle (Knott) Fiske on March 10, 1952. Their 64 years of marriage produced three daughters and three
granddaughters. James’ family and his “girls” were the center of his life.
He spent several years in the National Guard as a young man and served three years as a proud Marine. One of the highlights of his life was serving as an honorary guard for Pres. Truman, in a visit to Missouri during his presidency.
He worked as a meat salesman for over 20 years when he became injured in a fire at work in Nov. 1972. In a miraculous recovery, he later worked as a volunteer for his wife from 1980 to 2000 at the Northside Nutrition Center doing many roles of service for the senior citizens. He drove the Senior Citizen Bus and called Bingo for most of that 20 years of time. Even after retirement, he still enjoyed playing Bingo, working in his yard,
and later playing computer games.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Georgiabelle; daughters, Sandra (Fred) Landwersiek of Poplar Bluff and Teresa (Robert) Bono of San Antonio Texas, and granddaughters, Anastasia Bono, Ashley Bono, and Kristin Bono, and step-granddaughter, Hannah Landwersiek, all of Texas. He has many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great grand nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Floyd Findlay and sister-in-law, Katherine Findlay.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers and sisters, and one beloved daughter, Diana Lynn Fiske.
He was of the General Baptist faith.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Pastor Dick Murray of the First General Baptist Church of North Main St. officiating.
Mr. Fiske will be laid to rest in the Woodland City Cemetery, Poplar Bluff.
The family requests any memorials be sent to the First General Baptist Church of North Main Street.

 

Michael Thorne

Michael Lynn Thorne, 49, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016 at his home.

Michael was born February 20, 1967 in Indiana. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.  He enjoyed watching movies, sports and listening to CD’s.

He is survived by several cousins and friends.

His father, Robert S. Thorne and mother, Sallie (Lazalier) Judd and grandparents, Ed and Inez Lazalier preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Dustin Dewayne Johnson/Stoner

Dustin Dewayne Johnson-Stoner, 28, of Little Rock, Ark. passed from this life September 6, 2016 in Arkansas. He was born August 17, 1988 in Poplar Bluff, Mo.  He had formerly lived in Poplar Bluff.

Dustin enjoyed Razorback football, fishing, sports and music. He is survived by his father, James William Harris, of Wappapello; his mother, Toni Stoner and dad, Bobby Wade Stoner of Poplar Bluff; his siblings, Austin and Kaitlyn Stoner, Jessica and Shawn Harris; grandparents, Judi Allen of Little Rock, Bob and Marie Stoner of Dudley, Loraine and Marty Duley of Poplar Bluff; great-grandparents, Buddy and Wynette Williams of Fairdealing, Veda Elledge of Poplar Bluff and Betty Stoner of Dexter.

Dustin is preceded in death by grandparents, Dewayne Johnson, Richard Allen and Jim and Shirley Harris.

Dustin’s love for life will be missed by all that knew him.

Visitation will be Saturday September 10, 2016 at 9 a.m. at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., in the chapel, with Nick Stevens officiating. The service will conclude at the Funeral Home.

Ellen A. Tinsley, 75, of Poplar Bluff, Mo. passed away Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Tinsley was born October 29, 1940.  She was of the Baptist faith.  A homemaker, she enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and going to yard sales.

On March 13, 1957 she married Bob Tinsley.  He preceded her in death December 6, 2008.

Survivors include two sons, Tommy Ray Tinsley and Earl Lee Tinsley; 7 grandchildren, Brett, Eric, Lucas, Virginia, Jessy, Bobby, and Chris Tinsley; as well as 10 great-grandchildren.

She is also preceded in death by her father, Matt Lewis and Geneva (Blazer) Lewis; and two sons, Terry Gene Tinsley and Leonard Foy Tinsley.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, September 12, 2016 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Cochran Cemetery with Ray Lewis officiating.  She will be laid to rest in Cochran Cemetery.

 

Hubert Allen Jr.

Hubert Allen Jr., 65, of Poplar Bluff, Mo. passed away Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Allen was born January 26, 1952 in Tunica, Ms. He was a member of True Believers Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He worked as a cook at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.  He enjoyed fishing, cooking and singing in the choir.  Hubert served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

On February 14, 1981 he married Fannie (McCall) Allen in Corning, Ark.  She survives.

Other survivors include children, Charmin Rodgers, Carmen Rodgers, Carmeal Rodgers, Joseph Rodgers, and Anthony Rodgers; his father, Hubert Allen Sr.; one brother, Willie D. Allen; 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorie (Cunningham) Allen and a brother, Albert Allen; and son, Antonio Rodgers.

Services are pending with Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.

 

James Calvert Cooper

James Calvert Cooper, 69, of Williamsville, Mo., passed away Monday, September, 19, 2016 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 19, 1947, in Dexter, Mo., to Charles Dee Cooper and Helen M. (Sutton) Cooper.  Both preceded him in death. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  He was a supervisor at Southern Machine and Tool, Fisherscrew Products and Special Engineering.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.

On July 15, 2000 he married Charlie Cooper, who survives.

Other survivors include his daughter, Terrie Cooper (Ron); step-children, Rob Caudel and wife, Katie, Austin Caudel, and Amanda Anderson; a brother, W.C. Cooper and wife, Diana; 14 grandchildren; as well as two nephews, Wes and Brad Cooper.

A memorial service will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home, 844 Cedar Street, Poplar Bluff.


Johnny Lee Evans 66

Johnny Lee Evans, 66, of Naylor, Mo. passed away on Monday, Sept. 19, 2016 at John J. Pershing V.A. Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Evans was born on March 24, 1950 in Naylor, Mo. He worked as a farmer and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Johnny was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Vietnam era.

Survivors include 2 brothers, Jerry Lynn Evans of Naylor, Jeffery Allen Evans of Doniphan; one sister, Linda Gail Evans Tisdal & husband Buel of Naylor; as well as 5 nieces, Sammy, Marsha, Sherry, Amanda and Tammy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Von Evans and Della Mae Feasel Evans; one brother, Jimmy Von Evans; and one sister, Glenda Caroline Latham.

Visitation will be Friday Sept. 23, 2016 from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. at the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville. A graveside service will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the Evans Family Cemetery.

Debra Faye Lindberg

Debra Faye Lindberg, 60, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2016 in the Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Debra was born December 10, 1955, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Orville Coleman and Lorene (Helton) Coleman.  Both precede her in death.

She had worked as a waitress and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, walking, fishing and playing with her grandchildren.

On June 2, 1979 she married John Charles Lindberg, in Poplar Bluff.  He survives.

Other survivors include her children, Brandy Simmons (Brandon) and Charlie Lindberg (Ally); one sister, Mary Casey; sisters-in-law, Connie Coleman and Robin Coleman; her grandchildren, Annabelle, Logan, Luke and CJ.

She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Donna Coleman and Sandra Midkiff and 2 brothers, Ron Coleman and Carl Coleman, as well as a brother-in-law, Joe Casey.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 24, 2016 in the Old Oak Hill Cemetery, with Ron Fowler officiating.  Interment will follow.

Barbara Jean (Day) Richardson, 70, of Naylor, Mo., passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at her residence.

She was born October 6, 1945, in Doniphan, Mo., to the late Raymond and Dorothy Verneal (Robinson) Day.

She is survived by her sons, Billy Richardson and wife, Amber of Naylor, James Ray Kreyling and wife, Sherry of Fairdealing, Mo., daughters, Barbara Tolbert and husband, Scott of Pampa, Tx., and Tina Bond and husband, Rick of Wheeler, Tx.; three sisters, Darlene Isom and husband, Wayne of Neelyville, Mo., Diane Cullison and husband, Jerry, Connie Moore and husband, Cairl; brothers, Leon Day and wife, Sue, Kenny Day and wife, Teresa, Carter Day and wife, Sandy all of Naylor. She is also survived by 10 grandchild and 5 great-grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, as well as one brother, Max Day and sister, Vickie Wills Easter.

She was a member of the Naylor Church of God and enjoyed embroidery, painting, crafts, reading, and bass fishing.

Visitation for Barbara will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. at the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville. Burial will be held in the Naylor Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Kevin Guthrie officiating.

Michael “Mike” Ralph Croy, 71, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away September 22, 2016 at his residence. He was born August 18, 1945 in Kansas City, Kansas to the late Ralph Wilson Croy and Aleene Tidwell Croy.

On August 22, 1964 at Fagus, Missouri Mike was married to Gloria Baker. She survives

Also surviving, his children: Michael William Croy and wife Cheryl Denise of Poplar Bluff, Mo, and Karen Ann Riley and husband Tommy Hernando, Mississippi.. Brothers; Alva Croy of Oxly, Missouri and Fred Croy of Coffeyville, Mississippi. One sister Zelma Deffindaul of Honersville, Mo. also survives. Four grandchildren; Michael William Croy Jr., Phillip James Croy, Sarah Marie Elder and Brian Elder as well as two great granddaughter; Elizabeth Grace Croy, Holly Marie Elder.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as one brother, Bud Croy and three sisters; Louise Sterling, Brenda Wells and Lorretta Croy.

Visitation for Mike will be Sunday, September 25, 2016 starting at 6:00 p.m. in the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel Inc. of Neelyville, Mo., Funeral services will be Monday September 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Neelyville chapel. Burial will be in the Stringtown Cemetery at Poplar Buff, Missouri with Pastor Gregory Kirk officiating.

Patricia “Patty” Dianne (Steen) Burkeen, 57 of Poplar Bluff passed away Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Mark Twain Caring Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mrs. Burkeen was born August 30, 1959 in Doniphan, MO.  She had been a waitress.  She enjoyed painting, crafts, flower arranging and music.

Mrs. Burkeen is survived by two sons: Jeffrey and Ryan Burkeen, mother: Shirley Garner, sister Jada Joyner, brother Billy Joyner and 4 grandchildren.

Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, and a daughter: Tiffany Goforth

Visitation will begin at 2pm Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff.  A GRAVESIDE funeral will begin at 3pm Wednesday at City Cemetery.  Rev. Steve Patterson officiating.

Velma “Cricket” Arrington, 95, of Neelyville, Mo., passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the Black River Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Mrs. Arrington was born on July 19, 1921 in Zelma, Mo. She worked as a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening, flowers and puzzles. She attended the Friendship General Baptist Church in Coon Island, where she served as Sunday school teacher, sang in the church choir and did Vacation Bible School. Velma served as Neelyville Mayor from 1988 through the early 1990’s and was a member of the Eastern Star at Malden.
On July 13, 1940 she married Robert G. “Dugan” Arrington in Malden, Mo. He preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1988.

Survivors include 2 sons, Jim Arrington of Neelyville, Gayland Arrington and wife, Linda of Neelyville; 1 daughter, Peggy Duncan of Tallahassee, FL.; 8 grandchildren, Rodney Boyle, Robert Lyberger and wife, Donna, Dottie Curtner, Shannon Davis and husband, Steve, Holly Dobbins and husband, Justin, Josh Arrington and wife, Melissa, Lynn Derickson and husband, Eric and Amy Hogan and husband, John; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by parents, Howard I. Sturgeon and Clara Lacy Sturgeon; 1 daughter-in-law, Sandy; sisters, Bernice Peck, Alta Minzey, Frieda Day; brothers, A.E. Sturgeon, Bill Sturgeon, Alfred Sturgeon, and twin brother Delmond; and 1 grandson, Matthew Arrington.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville. Funeral will begin at 1:00 p.m., in the chapel, with Rev. Alan Lieutert officiating. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden, Mo.

Carrol L. Fletcher, 73 of Poplar Bluff passed away October 10, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Mr. Fletcher was born August 29, 1943 in New Madrid County, Mo., to the late James Evin Fletcher and Audrey Christine Brown-Fletcher.

Mr. Fletcher was a plumber.  Retired from Roberts.  He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.  He was retired from the United States Army and Army National Guard.

He is survived by his wife; Margaret (Schroeder) Fletcher; and children

Visitation will be Friday, October 14, 2016 6-8pm at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home Poplar Bluff.  Funeral service will be Saturday, October 15 in the chapel with Todd Allen officiating.  Burial with full military honors will be in City Cemetery.  A FULL OBITUARY WILL BE PUBLISHED SOON.  NO TIME HAS BEEN SET FOR THE SERVICE.

Master Sgt. Charles E. Newbern

Master Sgt. Charles Ernest Newbern, 75, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at his home.

Charles was born August 23, 1941, in Lafollette, Tn., to the late George A. Newbern and Mary (Reagan) Newbern. He served in the U.S. Air Force from which he retired.  He enjoyed playing music and was a member of the True Believers Church and formerly a member of the Masons.

On January 27, 1998 he married Priscilla “Peaches” (Earl) Newbern in Denver, Co.   She survives.

Other survivors include his children, Johnny Newbern (Michelle), Jenna Rochella, Richard Newbern, Craig Newbern, and Donald Ray Earl; two sisters, Frances Bailey and Martha Ogilvie; his grandchildren, Tamara, Princess, Lamuel, Madaline, Natalie, Private Jamal Newbern, Adrianna and Anglinia; sisters-in-law, Shirley Newbern and Channa Newbern, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends.

Mr. Newbern was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Margaret Newbern and two brothers, George and Robert Newbern.

Christine R. Winingnear

Christine R. Winingnear, 78, of Bloomfield, Missouri passed away October 12, 2016 in the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She was born January 20, 1939 at McDougal, Arkansas to the late Thomas Henry Dean and Edith Dickson Dean.

On February 2, 1961 at Piggott, Arkansas, She was married to James Winingnear. He survives.

Also surviving are her children; Two sons; Frankie D. Winingnear of Bloomfield, Missouri and James O. Winingnear and wife Leatha of Puxico, Missouri, One daughter, Tammy Null and husband Kenny of Puxico, Mo. One grandson; Ryan Winingnear. three sisters; Sherlene Parker of Corning, Arkansas, Earlene Moore of Datto, Arkansas and Georgie Herring of Coning, Arkansas, Two brothers; Roy Dean of Fredericktown, Missouri and A.C. Dean of McDougal, Arkansas.

She is preceded in death by her parents as well as one sister; Ruth and four brothers; Brooksie Dean, Gale Dean, Willard Dean and Willie Dean.

She was a member of the Sturdivant Apostolic Pentecostal Church and had worked as a nurse’s aide. She enjoyed her church and working, flowers, collecting owls, embroidering, cooking and canning.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday October 15, 2016 in the Sturdivant Apostolic Church at Sturdivant, Missouri with the funeral following at 1:00p.m. at the church Saturday. Interment will be in the Fagan Cemetery at Puxico, Missouri with Rev. Dale Holman officiating.
